An iCan CGM sensor is designed to stay on your arm for the full wear period, usually 14 days. Sometimes it comes off sooner than expected. It happens to almost every long term CGM user at some point, and the reasons are usually simple to fix. This guide walks you through what to do the moment it happens, how to protect your data, and how to prevent early drop offs in the future.
First Steps When a Sensor Falls Off
If your sensor comes off in the first day or two, do not throw it away. Check the adhesive patch first. If the sticky pad is still clean and the sensor housing looks undamaged, you may be able to reapply it with medical tape or an adhesive patch. Clean the skin, dry it fully, place the sensor back in the same spot, and cover the edges with a fresh overpatch. This is not always successful, but it is worth trying before you write off the sensor.
If the sensor filament came out of the skin or the housing looks bent, do not try to reinsert it. The filament is designed for one time use and will not read accurately once it has been disturbed.
Contact Customer Support
The iCan CGM has a customer support process for early failures. Save the sensor and note the serial number on the packaging. Reach out through the app or the official support channel with the details of when you applied it, when it came off, and what you were doing at the time. In many cases, a replacement can be arranged. Keeping a photo of the sensor after it fell off often speeds up the process.
Common Reasons Sensors Fall Off Early
The most common reason is skin prep. If your arm had lotion, sweat, or leftover soap residue when you applied the sensor, the adhesive never got a proper bond. Even a small amount of moisture reduces stickiness by a large margin.
Body hair is another factor. If the application site had thick hair, the adhesive was sticking to the hair, not the skin. When the hair shifts, the sensor lifts.
Physical friction also plays a role. Tight sleeves, gym straps, backpack straps, or a car seat belt rubbing across the sensor can loosen the edges over time. Sleep position matters too. If you sleep on the same arm every night, the pressure can slowly work the adhesive free.
Water exposure is usually fine for short periods, but long hot showers, saunas, and swimming sessions can weaken the adhesive faster than expected. Repeated exposure over several days adds up.
How to Prevent Early Drop Offs
Prep your skin properly before you apply. Wash the area with plain soap and water, rinse well, and dry completely. Avoid lotion, moisturizer, or oil on the application site for at least 24 hours before insertion. If you have body hair on your upper arm, shave the spot the day before and let the skin settle overnight.
Some CGM users wipe the skin with a small alcohol swab after washing. This removes any remaining oils and gives the adhesive a stronger surface to grip. Let the alcohol dry fully before applying the sensor.
Once the sensor is on, press firmly around the entire edge for at least 30 seconds. This activates the adhesive and locks it to your skin.
Using Overpatches for Extra Security
An overpatch is a thin adhesive layer that sits over the sensor and adds extra hold. Many iCan CGM users apply one from day one, especially if they exercise, sleep hot, or have active work routines. Overpatches are affordable, easy to apply, and often the difference between a sensor lasting 14 days and one that falls off on day six.
When to Change Your Placement
If sensors keep falling off in the same spot, switch to a different location. The back of the upper arm, closer to the shoulder, tends to have less friction from clothing and daily movement. If you sleep on your side, try placing the sensor on the arm you sleep on least. Small changes in placement often solve the problem for good.
Protect Your Data While You Fix the Problem
If your sensor falls off mid wear, your app will stop receiving new readings. Do not delete the sensor from the app until you have finished with it. If a replacement is coming, the app can still show your past data, and having a complete log helps you and your care team spot patterns.
An early drop off is frustrating, but almost every case is preventable once you know what caused it. A little extra prep, a good overpatch, and smart placement will give you the full wear time your iCan CGM was built to deliver.
